Dealing With Whiplash &

Motor Vehicle Accidents

Motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) can be devastating. They can turn your life inside out and upside down. The pain can be debilitating, and it can wreak havoc on you physically as well as psychologically. Some that have been in a MVA never drive again because the resulting anxiety. Fortunately, some that have been in motor vehicle accidents, come out unscathed. Others are not so lucky.

The problem is that there is no telling what pain you may experience after a motor vehicle accident. This is why it is vital that you see a professional health care provider if you have been involved in a MVA. I have had patients be thrown from their vehicles and walk away unscathed. I’ve had other patients be involved in small vendor benders and come out having debilitating headaches and neck pain.

It is not uncommon after being involved in a MVA to have whiplash, neck pain, headache, shoulder pain, chest pain, arm pain, wrist pain, back pain, leg pain hip pain, knee pain, a pinched nerve or sciatica. Sometimes these symptoms come on immediately or shortly after the accident. In some instances, it may take several days before you experience these symptoms. In Alberta, these are a few simple steps that I recommend you follow if you have been involved in a motor vehicle accident:

Within 10 Days:

File an injury accident with the police

It is important to have documentation! Creating an accident report with the police creates a paper trail detailing the accident. This will be used when getting your car fixed (if needed), and to have treatment covered (if required).

Seek treatment from a primary health care provider

You should see a chiropractor, physical therapist, or medical doctor. I am slightly biased, and I believe you should seek out an exceptional chiropractor.

If your injury is classified as a sprain, strain, or minor whiplash, you do not need authorization from your insurer. You may start treatment IMMEDIATELY.

In fact, I recommend that you seek out a quality health care provider as soon as possible, to get the care you need as quickly as possible, if needed. Your insurance company will be billed directly.

File the appropriate forms with your insurer

This process can quickly become overwhelming. I am here to help you! These forms are available from your health care provider (that’s us), or your insurer, or insurance broker. If you ever have questions or concerns about any of this, please call. We will walk you through through the process and paperwork. I want you to focus on what’s important, getting better. Let us worry about the paper pushing.

If you have any questions, please contact your auto insurance company and ask about your MVA health care coverage under Section B.
